International Cooperation on Semiconductor Innovation and Supply Resilience (ICOS-SQUARED)

Project
International Cooperation on Semiconductor Innovation and Supply Resilience (ICOS-SQUARED)

Description
ICOS-SQUARED is a project aimed at strengthening the European semiconductor ecosystem by developing international research, technological and industrial cooperation, and by enhancing the resilience of European semiconductor value chains.

The project responds to strategic challenges related to global technological competition in semiconductors, supply chain dependencies, economic security risks, and the need for better coordination of research and innovation activities in Europe. ICOS-SQUARED will provide the European Commission, Member States, and industrial and research stakeholders with analyses, recommendations and scenarios supporting decision-making on international cooperation in the semiconductor sector.

In particular, the project aims to:
• map global semiconductor supply chains and analyse their vulnerabilities,
• assess Europe’s position in emerging semiconductor technologies, patents, publications and standards,
• analyse economic security risks, including technological dependencies, export controls, overcapacities and non-market practices,
• assess existing political, industrial and research cooperation frameworks between the EU and non-EU countries,
• prepare recommendations for international cooperation, joint calls and researcher mobility.

Warsaw University of Technology participates in the project through the Centre for Advanced Materials and Technologies CEZAMAT. The activities carried out by WUT focus on expert contributions to supply chain analysis, economic security risk assessment, mapping of the emerging semiconductor technology landscape, analysis of existing international cooperation frameworks, and actions related to researcher mobility.

Participation in the project strengthens the role of CEZAMAT WUT in the European semiconductor ecosystem and further develops Warsaw University of Technology’s engagement in initiatives supporting technological sovereignty, supply chain resilience and international research and innovation cooperation.
