Rapid COVID-19 diagnostics with the use of surface plasmon resonance sensors


The aim of the project is to investigate the possibility of using a detection system using the phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the diagnosis of COVID-19. The project will identify the most beneficial peptides derived from SARS-CoV-2, which can be used as probes to detect antibodies in patients’ plasma. In the initial phase of the project, the process of antibody detection using peptides under laboratory conditions will be tested on a commercially available SPR device. The project will further include the preparation of SPR sensors with immobilized peptide and the integration of these sensors with a portable device for rapid detection of SPR interactions. Ready-made sensors with a portable SPR device will be used to detect anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in patients’ plasma. The detection results will be compared with those obtained in the same patients by standard diagnostic methods.

The expected result of the project will be the development of an effective method for rapid detection of antibodies that confirm the patient’s contact with SARS-CoV-2, which can ultimately be implemented for the screening of patients. The assumption of the method is to obtain a result within approximately 15 minutes from taking a sample from the patient and the possibility of performing the test in the field, without access to laboratory infrastructure
